MANOEUVRES

As you are probably aware you will be required to carry out one driving manoeuvre on the practical driving test. You will need to learn the four manoeuvres listed below prior to taking the test. Worthing test centre does not test you on the bay parking manoeuvre.

  1. 1.Turn in the road

  2. 2.Reverse/parallel parking

  3. 3.Reverse around a corner

  4. 4.Bay parking (not tested at all test centres)

Before you attempt your first manoeuvre you will learn how to reverse the car in a straight line by the kerb. This will give you an idea of what it’s like to reverse and look out the rear window and mirrors. To achieve success with your manoeuvres you will need to show the following:

CONTROL:

You will need to demonstrate good control of the car at very slow speeds by use of the gas, clutch and brake pedals.

ACCURACY:

You will need to be able to steer the correct amount and the correct way avoiding hitting or mounting the kerb and be able to steer very quickly while moving very slowly.

OBSERVATION:

While carrying out your manoeuvre you will need to show awareness of the road and traffic conditions and make the correct decisions whether to continue or wait. This can be achieved by continual looking out of the rear window, all three mirrors and blind spots.

Three questions to consider when carrying out your manoeuvre.

IS IT SAFE?                      eg.  Do not reverse from a side road into the main road

IS IT LEGAL?                   eg.  Do not turn your car round in a one way street

IS IT CONVENIENT?       eg.  Do not start your manoeuvre when there is an active car nearby

These are just a few examples, now is a good time to look up the reverse section in your Highway Code.

We will probably start the manoeuvres fairly soon after doing junctions as it will help you feel more in control of your car.
